The Denver Museum of Nature & Science expansion project will provide the museum with an additional 126,000f2 of space to house the new Education & Collections Facility. As part of the museum’s strategic masterplan called, “Museum 20/20,” the three-story, five-level addition allows space for both exhibitions and new scientific research.

Above ground, the facility will house a new interactive children’s centre, additional space for science programs, a flexible atrium space for a myriad of uses including hands-on experiments for visitors, a temporary exhibition gallery for travelling exhibitions, and “nature plaza,” where learning integrates with Denver’s City Park via a spacious terrace. The plaza will also serve as the museum’s new school entrance.

Below ground, the two levels of state-of-the art storage and preservation allow for the housing, study, and preservation of more than 1.4m artifacts and specimen in the museum’s research collections. The space will provide suitable temperature and humidity levels to ensure proper preservation.

Arup provided sustainability and engineering guidance to help the client reach ambitious sustainability goals, including securing a LEED Platinum certification, achieving a 50% improvement on ASHRAE 90.1 energy use guidelines, and assisting the museum in their goal to achieve a zero carbon footprint.
