Our tour group consisted of 10 Denver Architectural Foundation, two nonmembers and five members of the owner/design team of the building. The Metropolitan State College of Denver (Metro State) shares the Auraria Higher Education Campus with two other colleges, the University of Colorado Denver and Community College of Denver. A master plan was developed to identify a new “neighborhood” for use solely by Metro State students and faculty; the Student Success Building is the first building in this new neighborhood. The facility is approximately 145,000-square-foot facility and will house classrooms, offices, critical support services, the Office of the President, and special programs and departments such as the First Year Success Program, the Center for Innovation, and Center for Advanced Visualization and Experiential Analysis (CAVEA). A special thank you to our knowledgeable guides Sean Nesbitt, Director, Facilities Planning & Space Management for Metro State, Tania Salgado, Principal with RNL Design, and Phil Kocher, Mechanical Project Manager with RMH.

The building’s structure is structural steel and the skin consists of metal panels and high performing glass. The building is expected to achieve nearly 50% energy savings and LEED Gold certification. The reduction in energy is being achieved through indirect/direct evaporative cooling, an under floor air distribution system, high performing glass and insulation as well as many other measures.
