About the home: Construction of The Stonehouse at Capitol Hill began in 1891 during Denver’s late-19th-century building boom. Designed by the notable firm Varian & Sterner, the residence combines picturesque Queen Anne massing with Richardsonian Romanesque stonework, including a rusticated ashlar facade, steep slate roofs and a rounded tower. Original oak millwork, stained glass and a grand staircase preserve the craftsmanship of the period. Since purchasing the home in 2021, Joseph and Erika Massaquoi have continued that stewardship through preservation-sensitive roof, masonry and exterior repairs; historically compatible copper gutters and awnings; and eco-conscious HVAC, lighting, and smart-home updates. The property is currently being considered for individual Denver Landmark designation, reflecting both its architectural integrity and its place in the city’s history. Today, it remains a welcoming family home.
About the speakers: Joe Massaquoi is the founder and managing partner of Traverse Meridian Group, where he provides strategic finance advisory services to growth-stage, capital-intensive companies. During a 25-year finance career, he has served as CFO of Boom Supersonic and held executive roles at Boeing and Credit Suisse. He serves on the boards of DHI Group, Inc. and Red Rocks Credit Union and is a member of the Denver International Airport Community Advisory Committee. Born and raised in Sierra Leone, Joe came to the United States for college, earning a B.S. in Physics from Morehouse College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Outside work, Joe is a running enthusiast and enjoys exploring Colorado’s outdoor trails. Since 2021, he and Erika, their daughter Luba, and labradoodle Velvet, have made Denver their home.
Erika Dalya Massaquoi is a creative director, curator, educator and founder of The OULA Company, a fashion and lifestyle brand known for vibrant textiles and modern design. Born and raised in Miami, Erika credits the city’s color, architecture and multicultural neighborhoods as enduring creative influences. Her career has included work at the Museum of the Moving Image, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Seattle Art Museum, as well as service as Assistant Dean of the School of Art and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Erika earned a B.A. in History and an M.A. in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from New York University. Her interests include arts education and supporting emerging artists. She enjoys reading, cooking, hot yoga, exploring Denver’s food and design scenes, and horseback riding with Luba.
