About the tour: The United States Mint in Denver offers visitors a look into one of the nation’s most historic and productive minting facilities. Established during the Colorado Gold Rush, the Denver Mint has played a key role in transforming precious metals into coins used across the country for more than a century. Guests will learn about the history of the building, its classical architecture, and how coins are made today. The tour highlights the Mint’s importance to both Colorado’s history and the U.S. economy. It provides an engaging overview of how tradition, craftsmanship, and modern technology come together in American coin production.

About the building: The Denver Mint, completed in 1904, was designed by the New York firm Tracy, Swartwout, and Litchfield under Supervising Architect James Knox Taylor for the U.S. Treasury Department, and features a Second Renaissance Revival style inspired by Florence’s Palazzo Medici Riccardi. Its origins date to the Colorado Gold Rush, when Congress established a branch in 1862 that opened as an assay office in 1863 to melt and test gold rather than mint coins. In the 1890s, Congress authorized a purpose-built mint, and the current Italian Renaissance–style building on West Colfax Avenue began striking coins in 1906. Since then, the Denver Mint has produced billions of coins for circulation and remains one of the nation’s most important mint facilities, still operating today and offering public tours.

About the guides: This tour will be led by The Denver Mint staff.
