About this tour: Reaching for the masses, the lesser-known small structures that make up a sizable portion of the built world hold immense potential to impact the environment. While integration of mass timber has typically been associated with large buildings representing 3% of the built environment in the U.S. – One Line Studio shifts the focus to the small majority exploring the innovative use of timber in small structures and emphasizing the creation of durable, low-maintenance buildings that are deeply connected to their surroundings. With a focus upon creative problem solving, this is a discussion of opportunity, strategy, and practicality based upon lessons learned in creating integrated mass timber ecosystems.
Learning objectives:
1. Discuss coordination and collaboration between the design and the building team
through the stages of preconstruction, fabrication, and assembly with an emphasis on
lessons learned in problem solving, design flexibility, and field adaptation to meet site
environmental constraints.
2. Explain the challenges of just-in-time logistics on a site with limited storage capabilities
while dealing with the complexities of multiple trades, materials, and cross-border
fabrication.
3. Identify building design strategies integrating custom prefabricated DLT panels with
building systems, energy efficiency, and environmental considerations while navigating
the requirements of the building code.
4. Illustrate the potential that innovative use of wood can achieve in creating long lasting,
minimal maintenance structures that are connected to the exterior environment.
5. Illuminate the discovered benefits and challenges associated with the use of mass
timber in small buildings and its potential impact on the built environment.
HSW Description:
The discussion will include the beneficial physical effects among building users focusing upon acoustic
systems, energy efficiencies, integrated MEP systems, and the topic of resourcefulness with a desired
duality of material uses. Additional topics include the focus of implementing Code and life-safety features
Accessibility: Parking lot has one accessible parking stall with accessible access to the front entry. Main Floor is fully accessible and includes an accessible restroom. Basement and Mezzanine have limited access through stairways.
Please note that DAF tours take place rain, snow or shine. If your tour includes an outdoor portion, please dress for the weather. DAF staff will contact all attendees directly should a tour be cancelled for any reason.
