The Gowanus Canal was the channelized reminder of The Gowanus Canal was the channelized reminder of a former freshwater creek and tidal marsh. Industrial use in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries left a legacy of heavy pollution in the soil and water. Historic industrial buildings lined the canal. Residential neighborhoods had limited opportunities to access the water’s edge. Sponge Park was conceived as a series of public urban waterfront spaces that slow, absorb, and filter dirty surface water runoff to clean contaminated canal water, reduce combined sewer overflow, and add open space in a park-starved neighborhood.

Susannah C. Drake’s SPONGE PARK looks at this project in great detail, with photos, illustrations, plans, and diagrams. It demonstrates the concept’s potential as a component of a larger vision for a new paradigm of coastal urbanism, upland adaptation, and right-of-way design in the twenty-first century.

Join Susannah and the Denver Architecture Foundation for a lively lecture and conversation inspired by this project, which will kick off Doors Open Denver 2025 on Thursday, September 25, at the Denver Art Museum. Details and tickets at denverarchitecture.org.

OZ Architecture has been shaping communities with OZ Architecture has been shaping communities with creativity and craft since the late 1980s. Based in the RiNo Art District of Denver, Oz’s work includes architecture, interiors, urban planning, and experiential design. Their studio—set within two historic warehouses on Larimer Street, complete with exposed beams, brickwork, and preserved industrial cranes—embodies the adaptive reuse principles that define their practice.

As an On the Boards participant during Doors Open Denver, the @ozarchitecture offices will be open to the public on Friday, September 26.
