Box City Denver 2019

April 13, 2019

The Denver Architecture Foundation is proud to present BOX CITY 2019 in partnership with History Colorado Center on Saturday, April 13, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This popular annual event is FUN and family-friendly!

Box City is an event for children—grades K-5—where participants learn about the process of urban development and the principles that make for sound architecture, design and planning. Students start with a Building Permit for their desired building type, make a draft sketch of their building in the Design Studio, stop at the Hardware Store to get their cardboard and paper supplies, and then head to the Construction Zone to make their Box City structure. After completing the Building Inspection process, students head to the Box City street grid where an Urban Planner helps them select an appropriate building site. Finally, children finish the process by picking up their Certificate of Occupancy that includes a photo of them with their building.

How to participate:

  1. Make a reservation: A limited number of tickets to guarantee entry are available at 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:00 PM, 12:30 PM, 1:00 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:00 PM, 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM. One child per ticket; maximum four tickets per reservation. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult who must remain within the History Colorado Center atrium during their visit. Adult companions do not need a ticket – only participating children do. Allow a minimum of one hour for participants to complete the Box City process (90 minutes to two hours is not uncommon). Box City participants must finish by 4:30 PM (last entry at 3:00 PM). History Colorado Center exhibits are open to Box City participants from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 13, 2019.
  2. Walk in: Participants are welcome to drop by Box City any time between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM with entry on a first-come, first-served basis, after reservation ticket holders have been admitted (typically 10 minutes after each reservation). No new participants will be admitted after 3:00 PM. Entry is not guaranteed. Walk-in participants may be asked to purchase admission to History Colorado Center; rates can be found here.
