We are delighted to introduce you to a new board member of the Denver Architecture Foundation!

Stephen Catterall is wrapping up a 43-year career in interior planning and design in both Los Angeles and Denver, providing tenant planning services to developers, property owners, and tenants. A native of Powell, Wyoming, Stephen graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in American Studies, a perfect degree to use as a ski bum in Jackson Hole. A chance encounter as an assistant with a Jackson architecture and interior design firm opened his eyes to a world he hadn’t known in the little farm town of Powell. After a year and a half, he moved to Southern California and obtained a degree in Interior Architecture from Cal State Long Beach. The 80s were a booming time in LA, with high rise office buildings being constructed as locations for international law firms and financial institutions. Working for one the of largest commercial interior design firms in the country, Stephen eventually became a vice president. In 1992, he started his own firm, Catterall Design Office.

Stephen met his wife Sue at the Herman Miller showroom at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, when Sue worked for Herman Miller. They share a passion for mid-century design and have an extensive collection of Eames, Nelson, and Saarinen furniture. Stephen is an avid hiker and backpacker, having completed the Colorado Trail and the Kumano Kodo in Japan, trekked to Everest Base Camp, and is chipping away at the Camino de Santiago. As a volunteer with Historic Denver’s Discover Denver project, he explores the many wonderful neighborhoods that create the great city of Denver.

Please join us in welcoming Stephen to our board of directors.

Scenes from the Common Ground Community Design Pro

Scenes from the Common Ground Community Design Project reception on the first day of Doors Open Denver 2026. This collaborative project brought together dozens of stakeholders from multiple organizations for a community-focused endeavor that we’re proud of. Architecture students at the CU Denver College of Architecture and Planning studying with Assistant Professor Leyuan Li were paired with local community organizations to design and build custom outdoor installations for five different Colorado nonprofits. These constructions celebrate the power of design to create a Denver where everyone belongs.

This is the photograph that won Best in Show in the Visions of Denver Architecture photography competition, hosted by the Denver Architecture Foundation as part of Doors Open Denver 2026. The photo is titled “Convergence,” and the photographer is Eric Hagemann.

Over the next many weeks, we’ll share the other award-winning photographs from this year’s contest. You may see all of them at our online exhibition on the Denver Architecture Foundation website.

Special thanks to this year’s juror, @emredfield.
