Recap: After Dark Tour Series: STEAM on the Platte

DAF was delighted to announce a NEW After Dark architectural lighting tour series in partnership with the Illuminating Engineering Society. Great lighting design often goes unnoticed, making it one of the unsung heroes in many great buildings and landscapes. Good lighting is necessary to sustain human activity, of course, but great lighting can enhance way-finding, draw attention to or away from building features and even work in tandem with the circadian rhythm of humans. In this series we examined three iconic Denver buildings – Denver Union Station, Ellie Caulkins Opera House and STEAM on the Platte – from the perspective of lighting design. Tour guides discussed what makes for great lighting and why its significance in architecture should never be overlooked.

About this tour: STEAM on the Platte is a visionary mixed-use development of an abandoned industrial warehouse just southwest of downtown in Denver’s Sun Valley neighborhood. AE Design guided participants through this understated gem that still contains many of its original features. A highlight of the tour was the opportunity to explore the offices of one of the building’s high-tech tenants.

About the tour guides: Christina Kelch, EI, LEED Green Assoc., Project Designer at AE Design, has 10 years of experience in the AEC/MEP industry, four of those specific to electrical engineering and lighting design. With her BA in Architectural Engineering Technology from the University of Cincinnati, Christina enjoys bringing communities together through creative design that provides resources to the community and decreases urban sprawl. Through her work on project types ranging from Commercial Renovations, Parks and Animal Hospitals to Office TIs and more, she keeps decarbonization and energy savings top of mind, while creating spaces that advance the human experience.

Sai Krishna V, JR. Assoc. IALD, MIES, Project Designer at AE Design, aims to bring beautifully crafted architecture to life through lighting design. With a master’s in Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University (PSU), Sai combines technical expertise with an eye for creativity to accomplish harmonious and detail-oriented design. With lighting design experience in Dubai, Los Angeles and Denver, he continues to build his portfolio with project types ranging from high-end residential, exterior plazas and corporate offices to auditorium spaces and animal facilities.
