August 30 through October 17, 2021

Doors Open Denver Archival Tour: Denver International Airport Public Art Collection

Tour guides: Jennifer Garner, Exhibits Curator, Arts and Events | Global Communications and Marketing, Denver International Airport and Marcus Robinson, Program Coordinator, Arts and Events | Global Communications and Marketing, Denver International Airport

About the tour: Join us for an inside look at DEN’s permanent art collection! This behind the scenes tour will educate participants on how the collection came to be, how it continues to grow, and how it coexists alongside the ever-continuing conspiracy theories surrounding the airport since it opened. Fun facts, maintenance and navigating the current construction will also be discussed, as well as the challenges of managing public art and exhibits at one of the nation’s busiest airports. This tour is a collaborative historical discussion of our collection in a relaxed and conversational atmosphere.

About the structure: Denver International Airport (DEN) is one of the most unique airports in the world with its tented main terminal that connects to three large concourses. The airport opened in 1995 and sits on 53 square miles of land. Permanent collection artworks as well as rotating exhibits are positioned throughout the airport, at the Westin Denver International Airport hotel and at several locations on its expansive campus. DEN’s award-winning architecture and magnificent views of the Rocky Mountains create a unique atmosphere for travelers. Jeppesen Terminal’s internationally recognized peaked roof, designed by Fentress Bradburn Architects, is reflective of snow-capped mountains and evokes the early history of Colorado when Native American teepees were located across the Great Plains.

About the tour guides: Jennifer Garner is the Exhibits Curator at Denver International Airport (DEN) and is responsible for all of the temporary, rotating exhibits throughout the airport. She also helps support the public art program and permanent collection. Additionally, Jennifer has become DEN’s in-house expert on the several long-standing conspiracy theories surrounding the airport since it was built. Jennifer has a BFA and MFA in printmaking, photography and art history. Before landing at DEN, she was a tenured professor in the Department of Art at Metropolitan State University for 20 years and dually served as the director of their off-campus art center, the CVA, and the on-campus Emmanuel Gallery.

Marcus Robinson is a Denver native, avid cyclist, foodie, BBQ Pitmaster and lover of all things Colorado.
