The Petroleum Building Office to Residential Conversion | DOD 2026 Insider Tour

September 25, 2026

About the tour: Join the Denver Architecture Foundation and Gensler for a walking tour of the Historic Petroleum Building ahead of its upcoming conversion from office to residential. The project’s Design Director will showcase the building as it stands currently and provide an overview of the conversion, including design concept and current state of the project. The tour will showcase one of the vacant floors where units are planned.

About the building: The Historic Petroleum Building is a 14-story tower located in the heart of Upper Downtown. Originally built in 1959, the Petroleum Building has seen many changes in its lifespan starting as an office primarily serving Oil & Gas companies then Public Defenders and now is finding a new use as residential with an upcoming conversion. The facades will be preserved and painted to return the building back to its original historic character while the inside is transformed into an apartment building.

About the tour guide: Alex Garrison is the Design Director at Gensler’s Denver office and is leading the conversion of the Petroleum Building. Alex works across mixed-use, adaptive reuse, hospitality, office, and airport projects.

Accessibility: This tour is fully accessible with elevator access to the vacant floor in the building.
